Why this page exists
Most US couples celebrating in Punta Cana are choosing between a symbolic resort ceremony and a civil marriage before an Oficial del Estado Civil. Same-sex marriage is not legally recognized in the Dominican Republic (US Embassy).

Legal requirements for visitors
- Who can marry legally. Foreign visitors can marry via civil ceremony or Catholic canonical marriage. Same-sex marriage is not legally recognized. Full country page: Dominican Republic.
- Documents (US Embassy). Passport + copies; copies of last entry stamps; sworn single-status declaration before a Dominican notary legalized at the Procuraduría General (or US notary + Dominican consulate legalization); apostilled birth certificate with legal Spanish translation; divorce or death certificate if applicable; two witnesses who are not family.
- Notice and fees. Dominican law requires notice of the intended marriage. US Embassy has cited RD$20,000 when both spouses are non-resident foreigners. Fees change — confirm with the Oficialía.
- Resort lead time. Resorts that host civil ceremonies often ask couples to arrive about three business days early so the officer can review paperwork.
- Symbolic default. Many "free" Punta Cana packages are symbolic. A paid legal supplement is common (for example Bahia Príncipe publishes one). Get legal vs symbolic in writing.
Legal vs symbolic here
If you need a marriage recognized at home and same-sex status matters, the Dominican Republic may not fit — marry at home or choose another country. Opposite-sex couples who want a DR marriage certificate should budget time for apostilles, translations and notice.
Paperwork checklist
- Confirm civil vs symbolic with the resort in writing.
- If civil: start apostilles, Spanish translations and the single-status declaration path from current US Embassy guidance.
- Plan arrival days for document review (often ~3 business days).
- Share Dominican entry e-ticket / tourist-card steps with guests (process changes).
- Compare resort fees against Officialía fees so you know what the "legal package" actually covers.
FAQ
Can same-sex couples marry legally in Punta Cana?
No. US Embassy Dominican Republic states same-sex marriage is not legally recognized. Couples often marry legally at home and hold a symbolic celebration in Punta Cana.
How long do documents take?
Apostilles and legalizations can take weeks. Follow current embassy steps rather than a blog checklist alone.
Is the free resort wedding enough?
Usually not for a legal marriage. Ask for the Oficialía fee, translation fee and any judge/officer fee in a written quote.
