Why this page exists
Quintana Roo (Cancun, Playa del Carmen, Tulum corridor) is where most US couples marrying on Mexico's Caribbean coast file their civil marriage. Resort packages on the sister site often cover the party; this page covers the legal piece.

Legal requirements for visitors
- Civil marriage only. Only a civil marriage performed by the Registro Civil is legal in Mexico. Religious or resort symbolic ceremonies do not create a marriage under Mexican law. (US Embassy Mexico; Mexican Civil Code framework.)
- Quintana Roo specifics. Cancun / Riviera Maya sit in Quintana Roo. That state's Civil Code art. 682 frac. II medical-certificate requirement was derogated (Periódico Oficial, 23 Jul 2026) and pre-marriage health talks were made voluntary — other Mexican states may still require in-country medical certificates. Always confirm with the municipality where you will marry.
- Typical documents. Passports and proof of legal stay; apostilled US birth certificates with official Spanish translation when the registry requires them; divorce or death certificates if applicable; witnesses with photo ID (often four). US Embassy Mexico: only civil registry marriages are legal.
- Same-sex couples. Same-sex civil marriage is legal across Mexico's states (nationwide since 2022). Confirm appointment steps with the local Registro Civil.
- Timing. Municipalities such as Playa del Carmen have cited multi-week lead times for paperwork. Start apostilles and translations early if you need a legal Mexican marriage.
Legal vs symbolic here
Many all-inclusive "free weddings" in Cancun are symbolic. Couples who need a US-recognized marriage either (a) complete the Quintana Roo civil process, or (b) marry legally at home and celebrate symbolically at the resort. See our legal vs symbolic guide.
Paperwork checklist
- Decide civil Mexico marriage vs marry-at-home + symbolic celebration.
- If civil: contact the Registro Civil for your municipality (Cancun, Solidaridad/Playa, Tulum, etc.).
- Order apostilled US vital records and schedule Spanish translations as required.
- Confirm witness rules and appointment lead time in writing.
- Read the resort package fine print so you do not pay twice for a "legal" add-on you already arranged.
FAQ
Is a Cancun resort wedding automatically legal?
No. Legal status comes from the Registro Civil, not the resort. Most free packages are symbolic unless a civil ceremony is added.
Do US medical exams done at home count?
Quintana Roo repealed its prenuptial medical-certificate rule in 2026, but other Mexican states still require exams done in Mexico. Confirm the municipality — do not assume Cancun rules apply in Cabo or elsewhere.
Will our Mexican marriage certificate be recognized in the US?
Marriages valid where performed are generally recognized in the US, but you may need an apostille on the Mexican certificate for some US uses. See is my marriage recognized.
